Bangladesh may overtake China to become the European Union’s (EU) largest clothing supplier by 2020, Textiles Intelligence — a business information provider — revealed.
In 2016 EU clothing imports from Bangladesh rose in volume for the ninth consecutive year and Bangladesh’s share of EU clothing imports from all sources almost doubled over the nine-year period, from 12.2 per cent to 23.4 per cent, Textiles Intelligence has reported.
Meanwhile, the share of EU clothing imports from China fell in terms of volume for the sixth consecutive year to 37.9 per cent.
In 2010 more than half of the volume of EU clothing imports came from China. By 2016 this had dropped to a third.
In 2016 Bangladesh was the second-cheapest clothing supplier to the EU, behind Pakistan and ahead of China.
