The by-election to the vacant mayor post of the Dhaka North City Corporation will be held on February 26, 2018.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda announced the election date and schedule at a press briefing at his office in the Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday.
The CEC also announced that the deadline for filing nomination is January 18.
Then the nominations will be scrutinised on January 21 and 22.
The deadline to withdraw candidacy is January 29.
Besides, the EC will arrange polls to the 36 councilor posts and 12 reserved seats in the 36 new wards – 18 of the DNCC and 18 of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) – on the same day.
Talking at the briefing, Nurul Huda said, “The Election Commission is considering this election as of significant importance.”
“We expect support from all stakeholders. We hope this will be a vote festival,” he added.
The mayor post of DNCC fell vacant on November 30 when its mayor Annisul Huq sadly passed away at a hospital in London where he was undergoing treatment.
Notably, a by-election must be held within 90 days of the seat falling vacant, as per the local government (City Corporation) laws.
On April 28, 2015, Awami League candidate Annisul Huq won the election for the mayor post of DNCC.
