BB trashes report on gold alteration at its vault

FT ONLINE

Bangladesh Bank (BB) has outright rejected the allegation by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) the gold preserved in its vault was altered.

Dismissing the news published in a national daily based on a Customs Intelligence report, BB Executive Director Md Rabiul Hussain at a press briefing at the central bank on Tuesday said there is no scope of changing or altering the gold preserved in the central bank’s vault. “The report is absolutely baseless… there’s no scope of alteration,” he said.

The central bank official claimed that the report was arbitrarily prepared by the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate and it has no relation with the Bangladesh Bank.

He also mentioned that the reading of Bangladesh Bank’s machine and that of NBR varies sometimes. “Each machine reads differently,” he said adding that Bangladesh Bank has a doubt about the credibility of NBR machine’s reading.

Rabiul Hussain mentioned that the central bank has already offered to check the matter through a third-party machine, especially for the cases where there were differences in reading.

The central bank arranged the press briefing against the backdrop of a report published in a leading daily with NBR reference on the alteration of some gold-ornaments and gold wheels in its vault.

It was reported that a study was conducted on 963 kg of gold preserved in the Bangladesh Bank vault and a huge alteration was during machine reading.
