JU students blocked the Dhaka-Aricha Highway against quota system

Jahangirnagar University (JU) students blocked the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in front of the university on sunday demanding immediate decline of the quota system in recruitment to government jobs as well as BCS recruitment test.

Spectators said around 400 students of JU under the banner of ‘Sadharon Sikkharthi’ brought out a procession from the university campus and put up barricade on the highway at about 4.00 pm.

The protesters questioned the government: “why is there so much discrimination in the job field while the country’s constitution speaks of equal rights? They are want to reduce the quota systems from 56 percentages to 10 percentages.

Due to the blockade, vehicular movement on the busiest highway came to a halt creating long tailbacks and causing immense suffering to the commuters.

Ashulia police came to the spot in an attempt to control the situation but the students did not allow them to do so. Then JU Satro League Secretary come to the spot and insisted protesters to free the highway.

Around 4.30 pm, JU Proctor shikder MD. Zulkarnain came to the spot and requested the students to leave the road as over two kilometres traffic congestion had developed on both sides of the road, the protestors responded by withdrawing the blackade and leaving the road.
