5 gunned down, 10 injured in Rangamati

The death toll from the gun attack by unknown miscreants at Betchari Kenggalchari in Naniarchar upazila of Rangamati on Friday increased to five as one more victim succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital, police said.

The deceased were identified as Tapan Joyti Chakma Borma, chief of UPDF Ganotanthrik Dal, Jana Sanghat Samity (MN Larma) activists Setu Lal Chakma, Pranab Chakma and Sujan Chakma and car driver Md Sajib.

They came under the attack on the Rangamati-Khagrachari road while going to the funeral of slain Naniarchar upazila chairman Shaktiman Chakma, said Naniarchar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Latif.

Of the injured, eight were identified as Diganta Chakma, Archin Chakma, Arjun Chakma, Jelzi Kumar Chakma, Mihir Chakma, Jibanta Chakma, Kanti Ranjan Chakma and Priti Kumar.

Abdul Latif said a group of unknown miscreants attacked them at around 11 am when they were going to the funeral programme at Kukur Mara. The gun attack left five people dead and 10 others injured.

A team of police, led by Rangamati Sadar Circle Additional Police Super Md Jahangir visited the spot.

Among the injured, four were sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital in critical conditions while six others were admitted to Khagrachari Sadar Hospital.

Shaktiman Chakma, 55, a leader of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (MN Larma faction) and chairman of Naniarchar upazila, was shot dead by unidentified terrorists in front of the upazila parishad complex on Thursday.
