Khaleda JailBNP plans sit-in, hunger strike

BNP on Saturday announced another round of three-day countrywide programme from Monday to Wednesday to register the party’s protest against the jailing of its chairperson Khaleda Zia.

The programmes are also meant for mounting pressure on the government to release her immediately from jail.

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the programmes at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.

As part of the programmes, he said, the party followers will stage a human chain programme on Monday while an hour-long sit in on Tuesday and a hunger strike from 9am to 5pm on Wednesday.

Rizvi said their party’s district, thana, upzila and city units will observe the programmes at their convenient time and place, while the venues for staging the programmes in the capital will be announced later.

On Thursday last, a special court here convicted Khaleda and sentenced her to five years’ imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

Around an hour later, BNP called a two-day protest programme for Friday and Saturday.

BNP leaders and activists brought out processions in the capital on Friday and Saturday chanting slogans seeking Khaleda’s release, but police dispersed them minutes later.

Rizvi said the government will not be able to demoralise Khaleda by jailing her and hatching conspiracy against her. “As a leader of people, she will lead the movement for realising their rights, no matter where she stays. That’s why we’re announcing the fresh programmes.”

He alleged that police arrested their party’s around 50 leaders and activists in the capital on Saturday as they brought out processions protesting Khaleda’s jailing.

The BNP leader said police also arrested their party’s many leaders and followers at different districts, including Narayanganj, Netrokona, Chittagong, Gaibandha, Tangail, Feni, Comilla, Natore, Narail, Bhola and Pirojpur, the same day.

He claimed that their party’s around 4,200 leaders and activists have so far been arrested across the country over the last 12 days.
