Jahangir, Khaleq get AL tickets for Gazipur, Khulna city polls

Bangladesh Awami League (AL) on Monday nominated Jahangir Alam and Talukdar Abdul Khaleq as candidates for the mayoral posts of Gazipur City Corporation and Khulna City Corporation elections slated for May 15.

The nominations were finalized at a meeting of the Awami League Local Government Election Nomination Board at Ganabhaban in the evening, with the Board chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

"The meeting unanimously nominated Jahangir Alam and Talukdar Abdul Khaleq for the mayoral posts of Gazipur City Corporation and Khulna City Corporation polls," Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader told a press briefing lastnight after the meeting.

Quader also said the meeting also finalized the nominations of candidates of two upazila parishad election, one pourasabha and 13 union parishads and poursabhas.

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda announced the election schedule for the two city corporations at a press conference at the Nirbachon Bhaban in the capital on March 31.

According to the election schedule, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers is April 12, while the dates for scrutinizing those are April 15 and 16, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 23.

Dhaka Regional Election Officer Rakibuddin Mandol has been made the returning officer for Gazipur City Corporation election, while Khulna Regional Election Officer Md Yunus Ali for Khulna City Corporation election.
