The United States Trade Representative (USTR) has asked Bangladesh to submit a written proposal outlining its commitment to reduce tariffs on American goods.

In a letter to Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin on 7 May, USTR Jamieson Greer welcomed Bangladesh’s move to initiate negotiations under US President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariff policy and appreciated the country’s efforts to narrow the trade gap with the US.

“My team is ready to engage with Bangladesh to address the persistent bilateral trade deficit by reducing agricultural and industrial tariffs and non-tariff barriers, as well as aligning with the United States on economic security matters,” Greer wrote.

He also encouraged Bangladesh to address issues of concern, including labour rights violations and digital trade restrictions.

“We welcome the positive steps your letter references regarding Bangladesh’s reform initiatives linked to key US interests. We look forward to receiving a written offer from your government so that we can commence formal negotiations,” the letter added.
