Review body recommends abolishing quotas for 1st, 2nd class govt jobs

The committee formed by the government to review the existing quota system has recommended for abolishing the existing quota in the first and second class government jobs.

A gazette in this regard will be issued if the cabinet gives approval to the recommendation in its next meeting, Cabinet Secretary M Shafiul Alam told journalists at the Secretariat in the city on Monday.

On August 13, the cabinet secretary said that the committee proposed abolition of almost all the quotas in public services giving priority to talent.

At present, about 56 per cent of government jobs are reserved for candidates from various quotas.

The cabinet secretary then said, "Now time has come for us to go for open competition."

Shafiul Alam, however, said court directives will be sought before taking any decision over freedom fighter quota.

The government formed the seven-member committee on July 2 with Mohammad Shafiul Alam as its convener to review the existing quota system in public services.

The other members of the committee are secretaries of the Public Administration, Finance Division, Liberation War Affairs Ministry, Legislative Division and PSC, and the PMO acting secretary.

In April, students of public and private universities across the country waged a strong movement demanding reform in the quota system.

In the face of the movement, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced in Parliament on April 11 the abolition of all types of quotas in government jobs.
