Experts have underscored the need for "waste management" in a scientific way for the sake of sustainable economic development.

They urged for policy alignment to run industries in the right path to ensure a circular economy and also called upon industries and local government to work cordially for reducing waste, reusing and recycling resources and products.

The observations came up during a programme titled, "Current Scenario of Circular Economy in Bangladesh: Problem and Prospects" at the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industries (FBCCI) auditorium in Dhaka on Sunday.

During the programme, FBCCI President Md Jashim Uddin urged the government to lay emphasis on the collection system of waste management.

"We should lay emphasis on waste management to continue Bangladesh's economic growth, benefitting the environment," he added.

Mohammad Mosharreaf Hossain, professor of the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences (IFES) at the University of Chittagong, urged concerned ministries and businesses to ensure a circular economy system to achieve sustainable economic growth.

“We lack of data capacity and it needs to be resolved soon. We can reduce 60 per cent use of water in economic zones through circular economy and should emphasise on doing that,” he added

Dr Muhammad Sujauddin, assistant professor of Department of Environmental Science and Management at North South University, also presented a keynote paper at the programme in the presence of Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun.
