Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday sent a letter to the UK's Labour Party leader Keir Starmer congratulating him on becoming Britain’s new prime minister.
Sheikh Hasina also congratulated the Labour party’s historic win in UK’s 4 July national elections.
She said that Labour’s huge win is an unequivocal mandate that “clearly testifies the trust and confidence of the British people” in Starmer’s leadership to take UK to newer heights of progress and prosperity.
In the letter, the Bangladesh PM reflected on the enduring friendship of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his party Awami League with the UK’s Labour Party.
She remembered the supportive ties a number of Labour politicians maintained with Bangladesh during the latter’s War of Liberation in 1971, naming influential leaders like Sir Harold Wilson, Thomas Williams KC and Lord Peter Shore.
The present Awami League government is looking forward to working closely with UK’s new Starmer-led government for further strengthening bilateral ties in the fields of politics, economy, climate change and strategic issues, PM Hasina’s letter read.
She also called for jointly harnessing the contributions of the over 7 lakh Bangladeshi-origin Britons to the common good of both nations.
