The High Court has ordered that no cattle market can be set up at Meradia in Banashree, Dhaka, ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
The order was issued on Monday (28 April) by a High Court bench comprising Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque and Justice Ainum Naher Siddika.
The matter was confirmed on Tuesday (29 April) by Zahurul Islam, the lawyer for the petitioner.
Zahurul Islam said that on 21 April, the Dhaka South City Corporation issued a lease notice announcing the decision to set up a cattle market at Meradia in Banashree. Challenging this notice, Banashree resident Shahabuddin Sarker filed a writ petition.
Following a hearing, the High Court on Monday suspended the lease notice for three months and issued a rule in this regard.
Another lawyer, Khurram Shah Murad, said that Banashree is a residential area. When a cattle market is set up at Meradia, it spreads across the entire residential zone, causing severe inconvenience to the residents. That is why the writ petition was filed with the High Court on behalf of the local residents.
