The government is set to pass the national budget, proposed on 2 June for the 2025–26 fiscal year, on Sunday despite the absence of the National Parliament.
The Advisory Council will convene at 10 am at Chief Adviser Prof Mohammad Yunus’s Office to formally approve the proposed budget.
Following the approval, the budget will receive presidential endorsement and be published through an official gazette.
The meeting is also expected to address ongoing unrest within the National Board of Revenue (NBR) following the controversial division of the organisation.
Finance ministry sources said the Advisory Council will discuss ways to ease tensions between the BCS (Customs and Excise) and BCS (Tax) cadres, which erupted after the government issued a gazette notification on 12 May implementing the NBR division ordinance.
Since then, officials from both cadres have expressed strong dissatisfaction and staged protests, including an indefinite work abstention.
Despite a series of meetings with the finance adviser and other members of the interim government, tensions have persisted.
In an attempt to resolve the crisis, the finance ministry issued a clarification on 25 May, stating that the NBR would be strengthened while safeguarding the interests of both cadre groups.
The ministry also committed to amending the ordinance as necessary by 31 July.
Furthermore, the ministry announced plans to establish a separate revenue policy framework by forming a specialised institution, in consultation with the NBR, the Revenue Reform Advisory Committee, and other stakeholders.
Following these assurances, NBR officials agreed to temporarily suspend their protests.
However, to preempt further unrest, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali issued a public notice on Friday banning all gatherings and demonstrations in the Agargaon area – including around the NBR headquarters – effective from Saturday.
The passage of the FY26 budget and the resolution of the NBR standoff will be closely watched, as they are expected to set the tone for fiscal governance and administrative reforms during the caretaker government’s remaining tenure.
