Rainy days ahead as low lingers over Bay

Bangladesh is set to be soaked by a spell of rain as a trough of low pressure continues to hover over the Bay of Bengal.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast rainfall across all eight divisions over the next two to three days.

“The low-pressure system is currently located over India's Bihar. Rainfall may intensify over the next two to three days. However, scattered rain is likely to continue afterward as well,” Meteorologist Md Omar Faruk said on Saturday.

In a special weather bulletin, the Met Office noted that the weather system, which had been located over Gangetic West Bengal, the adjoining northwestern Bay of Bengal, and coastal areas of Bangladesh, has since moved west-northwestward and was positioned over Gangetic West Bengal and adjacent Jharkhand as of midnight Friday.

It is expected to continue moving west-northwestward. Due to its influence, a strong pressure gradient prevails over the northern Bay of Bengal.

As a result, gusty or squally winds may sweep across the northern Bay of Bengal, coastal areas of Bangladesh, and its maritime ports.

The ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been advised to maintain local cautionary signal No. 3.

The BMD also warned that due to both the new moon and the low-pressure system, coastal districts, including Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Jhalokathi, Pirojpur, Barishal, Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Chandpur, Lakshmipur, Noakhali, Feni, Chattogram, and Cox’s Bazar, as well as nearby offshore islands and chars, may experience wind-driven tidal surges rising 1 to 3 feet above normal.

All fishing boats and trawlers in the northern Bay of Bengal have been advised to remain in safe shelter until further notice.

Meanwhile, in its regular morning bulletin on Saturday, the Met Office said that most areas in the Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, and many parts of the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, and Mymensingh divisions, may experience temporary gusty winds along with light to moderate rain or thundershowers.

Additionally, moderate to very heavy rainfall may occur at some places in the Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram divisions.

During this period, daytime temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged, while nighttime temperatures may slightly drop.

In the last 24 hours, the highest rainfall was recorded at 69mm in Cox’s Bazar, while Dhaka saw 17mm of rainfall.

Meanwhile, Nilphamari's Dimla recorded the highest temperature in the country at 37 degrees Celsius, while the lowest was 23 degrees Celsius in Nikli, Kishoreganj, and Tangail.
