Germany and Bangladesh reaffirmed their shared commitment to building a cleaner and more resilient energy future as CEMS-Global and GIZ Bangladesh jointly hosted a high-level conference on sustainable energy transition in Dhaka.

The event, titled the Conference on Innovations and Partnerships for Sustainable Energy Transition, was held on Saturday at Hall-5 (Pushpanjali) of the International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB).

The full-day conference brought together senior policymakers, development partners, financial institutions and private-sector leaders. Participants discussed strategies and innovations that could accelerate Bangladesh’s shift toward a low-carbon, energy-efficient economy.

The discussions also underscored the country’s increasing need for renewable energy, improved grid infrastructure and climate-resilient development, said a press release.

The event ran alongside the 27th Power Bangladesh International Expo 2025, the 22nd Solar Bangladesh International Expo 2025 and the 7th Dhaka International Lighting Expo 2025.

Together known as the 27th Power Series of Exhibitions, these platforms showcased advanced technologies in power generation, solar energy and next-generation lighting solutions, making them the largest energy-focused exhibitions in the country.

Throughout the conference, Germany’s long-standing cooperation with Bangladesh emerged as a central theme. Through GIZ Bangladesh, Germany continues to support a range of initiatives related to renewable energy expansion, grid integration, energy efficiency and e-mobility.

German support also extends to developing green skills through technical and vocational training programmes aimed at preparing local workers for the growing clean-energy sector.

The programme featured four thematic sessions focused on key aspects of Bangladesh’s energy transition. The first session highlighted how green cooling solutions, renewable energy and improved energy efficiency could jointly accelerate the country’s low-carbon pathway. Speakers emphasised the importance of adopting efficient technologies across industries to reduce emissions and manage rising cooling demands.

The second session explored the need for enhanced collaboration to develop green skills within the national workforce. Representatives from BRAC, the World Bank and the International Labour Organization stressed the importance of training programmes aligned with industry requirements, ensuring that Bangladesh has the human capital needed to support its expanding clean-energy landscape.

In the afternoon, discussions shifted to the potential of rooftop solar systems. The session examined how increased private-sector participation, supportive policies and innovative financing models could scale up rooftop solar adoption across both industrial and commercial sectors.

The final session of the day focused on Corporate Power Purchase Agreements (CPPAs), which experts described as an emerging opportunity for industries to access reliable and cost-effective clean electricity. Representatives from City Bank, the EU Delegation to Bangladesh, ib vogt APAC, BPDB and H&M highlighted the growing relevance of CPPAs in industrial decarbonisation and long-term sustainability planning.

Participants throughout the conference emphasised the urgency of stronger partnerships among government bodies, development agencies and the private sector.

They noted that coordinated efforts are vital to ensure Bangladesh’s smooth transition toward a sustainable and inclusive energy future.

CEMS-Global and GIZ Bangladesh concluded the event by reaffirming their commitment to supporting innovation, strengthening institutional capacity and continuing policy dialogue.

They stressed that these efforts are essential for building a cleaner, more resilient and climate-smart energy ecosystem for Bangladesh.
