Top gangster Binash ordered Musabbir killing: DB chief

Binash Dada aka Dilip; one of the top gangster of country's underworld network, ordered the killing of Swechchhasebak Dal leader Azizur Rahman Musabbir.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner and Detective Branch (DB) Chief Shafikul Islam disclosed the information while briefing reporters at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road on Saturday morning.

He said that the killing was linked disputes over extortion and territorial dominance in the Karwan Bazar area. Preliminary findings indicate that Dilip alias Binash is currently staying abroad.

Police reviewed CCTV footage from the crime scene immediately after the incident and identified two shooters named Jinnat and Rahim, he added.

The revelation came a day after the DB arrested one of the shooters, identified by a single name as Rahim, from Narsingdi.

A highly decorated team of Detective Branch; well-equipped with sophisticated weapons and modern technology, conducted this operation at a house in the Madhabdi police station area of Narsingdi early Friday.

They also recovered two foreign pistols, two magazines and 12 rounds of ammunition used in the murder. A case under the Arms Act has been filed against him at Madhabdi police station.

Drive against extortion syndicates soon

DB Chief Shafikul Islam said eight to nine extortion syndicates — both overt and covert — are currently operating at Karwan Bazar and the murder stemmed from rivalry over control of extortion earnings.

Asked about the identities of the arrestees Shafikul Islam said they should be described as extortionists.

“Extortionists have no political ideology and often misuse political identities or banners to carry out illegal activities.” he added.

According to reliable sources; DB is now working to dismantle theose syndicates and will launch drives soon.

Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies operations to recover illegal firearms from all over in the country have been intensified ahead of the 13th national parliamentary election and the referendum.

As part of the drive, DB’s Wari division arrested two individuals — Rana Molla, 26, and Nur Mohammad, 32 — during an operation in the Jatrabari area on Friday.

A foreign pistol, two magazines, seven rounds of ammunition and a motorcycle was recovered from them.

Case details

Earlier, Md Azizur Rahman Musabbir; former general secretary of Swechchhasebak Dal’s Dhaka North City unit, was shot dead by unidentified assailants at around 8:30 pm in an alley beside beside Hotel Super Star in West Tejturi Para of Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue on January 7.

Another man, identified as Sufian Bepari Masud, 40, was also shot during the incident and was later referred to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for better treatment.

His wife filed a murder case with Tejgaon Police Station the following day against four to five unidentified individuals.

According to intels; several police team conducted raids across Dhaka, Gazipur, Manikganj, Mymensingh and Netrokona.

On Jan 11, officers arrested four people, including Jinat (24); an alleged shooter, Mohammad Billal; the suspected mastermind behind the shooting, Abdul Qadir (28); accused of helping the suspects evade arrest and Mohammad Riaz (31); who carried out reconnaissance at the scene a day before the attack.

A motorcycle without a number plate, believed to have been used in the murder, and Tk 6,000 in cash were seized during the operation.

On Jan 12, Jinat gave a confessional statement before a court. The same day, Riaz and his two brothers, Billal and Abdul Qadir, were remanded to police custody for seven days.

After the remand period, investigators produced the accused before a court on Jan 19 and were granted a fresh three-day remand to further question Billal. He was sent to jail on Thursday after completing the second remand.

So far, five people have been detained in connection with the killing.
