In the Tangail-8 (Sakhipur-Basail) constituency, a mobile court has fined independent candidate Saluddin Alamgir (Stag symbol) BDT 20,000 for allegedly slaughtering a cow and cooking biryani for voters. The court also ordered the cooked biryani to be distributed among various madrasas.
Assistant Commissioner (Land) Shamsun Nahar Shila conducted the mobile court at the Gadbari Bazar of Kakorajan Union.
It has been reported that allegations of "money splashing" among voters have surfaced against Saluddin Alamgir, the independent candidate for Tangail-8. He has reportedly chosen various paths to "purchase" votes at cheap rates.
Simultaneously, various slanders and propaganda are being spread against the BNP candidate, Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan. This is causing significantly more damage to the party than the candidate himself. Supporters of the BNP-nominated candidate alleged that Saluddin Alamgir, especially due to his arrogance over having more voters in Sakhipur, is considering himself an "undeclared MP" before the election. This, they claim, is likely to obstruct a fair election.
They stated that after 17 long years, the people finally have an opportunity to vote, but Saluddin Alamgir is confusing the residents of Basail-Sakhipur by taking "bags of money" to people's doorsteps. He is violating the electoral code of conduct by publicly distributing winter clothes and announcing these acts over megaphones during the campaign. Supporters of Saluddin Alamgir are openly boasting that poor people can be bought with money.
There has been a sudden surge in donations to madrasas and mosques ahead of the polls. Donations ranging from BDT 50,000 to 100,000 are being given to madrasas and mosques. There are mixed reactions among the public as to whether these pre-election donations are to please Almighty Allah or to buy votes.
Allegations have also surfaced that Saluddin Alamgir’s workers have established a "reign of terror" in Basail-Sakhipur. He is reportedly spreading "black money" among voters and BNP activists are being physically assaulted.
It is alleged that he is plotting to become an MP by buying votes with money. The issue of his money distribution is now the talk of the town. If this continues, there is a strong possibility that the BNP candidate could easily lose to the power of money in the Basail-Sakhipur seat.
There are serious allegations that many BNP leaders and workers are campaigning for the independent candidate out of greed for money.
There is a complaint of different allegations pending in Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against Saluddin Alamgir. Recently, a human chain was held against him in Tangail, but his associates reportedly used money to stop the media from broadcasting it.
Independent candidate Saluddin Alamgir is allegedly engaged in a conspiracy to buy the MP seat with money in the upcoming February 12 election. If this happens, the BNP may lose this seat. Therefore, there is no alternative for BNP activists but to remain vigilant and united.
Further allegations suggest that Saluddin Alamgir took significant business advantages during the Awami League government's tenure and had direct contact with Sheikh Hasina.
He has now entered the field with crores of taka to defeat the BNP candidate. Rumors have spread everywhere that Saluddin Alamgir has entered the field with BDT 400 crore.
Among the eight constituencies in Tangail, the situation in Basail-Sakhipur has become exceptionally complex; the BNP candidate may lose to the independent candidate's wealth.
Another allegation against Saluddin Alamgir has come to light in 2021. A joint venture business agreement was signed between the e-commerce platform Evaly and Saluddin Alamgir’s business firm, Labib Group.
There is an ACC case against Russell; owner of Evaly, who defrauded customers of thousands of crores. There are serious allegations that the two friends took many advantages during the Awami League regime.
The opposition is now trying to capitalize on this issue in the election field. However, Saluddin Alamgir has claimed to be an honest and idealistic businessman.
Meanwhile, in Basail, Tangail, the convoy of the BNP-nominated "Sheaf of Paddy" (Dhaner Shish) candidate, Adv. Ahmed Azam Khan, was blocked by miscreants who threw cement pillars and tree logs onto the road.
The incident occurred at around 2:00 AM on Sunday (February 1) while he was returning from a public meeting. Miscreants blocked the road with trees and electric poles in Deuli village under Kashil Union of Basail Upazila to stop the vehicles. His convoy remained stuck for about thirty minutes. Later, after informing the Basail police, they arrived and cleared the logs and poles from the road, allowing Ahmed Azam Khan to proceed.
When asked about these matters, independent candidate (Stag symbol) Saluddin Alamgir denied all allegations. He said, "There are no allegations against me anywhere, including the ACC. These are false and fabricated."
In response to another question, he said, "I don't have that much money. And according to government rules, one cannot spend more than BDT 4 crore."
