The body of Ali Mahmud (69), metropolitan editor at the Dainik Dinkal, has been recovered from the toilet of the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka. He was also a member of BNP media cell.
According to Shahbagh Police Station, the body was found around 9:00 AM after the toilet door was opened.
Confirming the matter, Shahbagh Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Md Moniruzzaman said, Press Club’s general secretary informed police over phone earlier in the morning.
After receiving the information, police went to the spot and recovered the body by breaking the toilet door opened, he said.
"He was bleeding from his nose and mouth. Preliminary assessment suggests that he may have died from a brain stroke, the OC added.
Mahmud’s wife and children accompanied the body to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after it was recovered.
Ali Mamud's eldest son, Amir Abdullah Tanvir, told reporters that the doctor on duty declared his father dead after he was brought to the hospital unconscious. His body has been taken to the hospital morgue for further examination.
Police said legal procedures are underway and the cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem examination.
In this regard, Ali Mamud's wife Jasmine Ara told reporters that Ali Mamud left home on Monday. At that time, he said that he would first go to the press club, then to his workplace during the day. Later, she could not reach Ali Mamud on the phone.
She said, "When Ali Mamud did not return home even after 12 midnight, I (Jasmine Ara) called the Dainik Dinkal's office and found out that Ali Mamud did not go to the daytime office."
"After spending the night filled with uncertainty and anxiety, this morning I came to the Press Club with my eldest son in search of Ali Mamud. He was not found after searching the club. Later, being suspicious, I and the club's general secretary searched the toilet. There we found Ali Mamud unconscious," she added.
She also said that Ali Mamud had a bypass surgery. He had fallen in the toilet twice before. He was always afraid of this.
It is worth noting that Ali Mamud has three children. His two sons are studying at university and his daughter is studying at college.
