A leader of Jamaat-e-Islami was detained by a mobile court in Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla on Wednesday morning over allegations of distributing money among voters.
The detainee, Habibur Rahman Helali, is the chief coordinator of the Jamaat-e-Islami election management committee for Saliakandi union in the upazila. Tk2 lakh in cash was recovered from his possession at the time of detention.
The incident took place in the Neamatkandi area under Saliakandi union. On information, Upazila Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Sakib Hasan Khan rushed to the spot and later took Helali into custody along with the recovered cash. He was subsequently handed over to Muradnagar Police Station.
However, Habibur Rahman Helali denied the allegation, claiming that he did not possess such a large amount of money.
He said the cash he had was meant for providing meals to Jamaat-e-Islami polling agents on duty at different centres and alleged that he had been framed.
Muradnagar upazila Assistant Returning Officer and Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdur Rahman said a team led by an executive magistrate was sent to the scene following reports of cash distribution.
“The accused had been taken to the police station and legal action would be taken after verification,” he added.
