A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed Bangladeshi-origin United States (US) citizen Enayet Karim Chowdhury on a fresh five-day remand over suspicious movements in the ministerial zone near Minto Road in the capital.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order after police produced the accused before the court, seeking a seven-day remand.

The court also granted a five-day remand for Enayet's associates SM Golam Mostafa Azad in the same case.

Earlier on 15 September, court granted two-day remamd for Enayet Karim Chowdhury.

On 13 September, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Dilruba Afroz Tithi’s court had ordered Enayet to be sent to jail after he was arrested over suspicious movements in a car around Minto Road.

According to the case documents, Enayet Karim Chowdhury is engaged in attempts to overthrow the interim government of Bangladesh by acting as an agent of a foreign intelligence agency, aiming to undermine public safety and national sovereignty.

He was detained by police after his suspicious movements in the Minto Road area. Two iPhones were seized from him, in which several pieces of information about conspiracies against the Bangladesh government were found.

During interrogation, Enayet Karim reportedly admitted that he is a Bangladeshi-origin US citizen who arrived in Dhaka from New York on 6 September.

He informed authorities that he is a contractual agent of a foreign intelligence agency and claimed that the interim government of Bangladesh is in a fragile state and has distanced itself from the army.

He said that he came here to work for the formation of a new national government or caretaker government.
