Prices of energy drinks, cigarette-bidi papers to rise

FT ONLINE

Energy drink and cigarette-bidi prices are expected to go up with the additional supplementary duty proposed in the budget for fiscal 2018-19.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith proposed to increase the supplementary duty on energy drinks to 35 per cent from the existing 25 per cent considering its “adverse health impacts”.

The minister also proposed an increase of 5 per cent supplementary duty of cigarette and bidi papers. The current supplementary duty on cigarette paper and bidi paper is 20 percent.

Supplementary duty is imposed to protect domestic industries from facing international competition, Muhith said while placing the budget.

In addition, this duty is also imposed with a view to restrict the use of certain undesirable or items. The supplementary duty is also aimed to collect more revenue.
