NBR seeks to freeze Buildtrade bank accounts

FT ONLINE

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has requested local banks to freeze accounts of Buildtrade Engineering Limited as the company has allegedly evaded tax worth Tk50.24 crore.

Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate of Dhaka (South) issued letters to 61 banks in this regard on Tuesday.

Enayetur Rahman, managing director of Channel Nine, is also the managing director of Buildtrade.

Moinul Khan, VAT commissioner of Dhaka (South), said two cases were filed earlier against this company for tax evasion.

"One of the cases was lodged for evading Tk26.68 crore and the other one was for evading Tk25.56 crore. Buildtrade deposited Tk2 crore in the first case in four installments throughout last year," said the commissioner.

They did not deposit the Tk50.24 crore and filed an appeal with the Customs Appellate Tribunal, he added.

"But the tribunal discarded their appeal. So, according to the law, a notice has been served to the banks to freeze its accounts so that we can realise the dues," said Moinul.

After the plea was discarded from the tribunal, we served them with two notices to pay the dues, the commissioner said.

The notice asking to freeze the Buildtrade accounts was sent to the NBR chairman and the Bangladesh Bank governor, Moinul said.

Besides, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has also been requested to monitor the issue.

The notice has asked the bank authorities to halt all the bank accounts of Buildtrade for next 15 days, initially.

If the company does not pay the due amount by this time, measures like locking Business Identification Number (BIN) and other legal procedures will be followed, said the VAT official.
