Attempt on Sheikh Hasina in Gopalganj: death reference reaches HC


The death reference of 14 militants facing capital punishment in a sedition case for planting 76kg bomb at Kotalipara in Gopalganj in order to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2000 has reached the High Court.

Officials of the trial court in Dhaka took documents of the case coupled with judgment to the HC Monday afternoon.

According to Special Officer of the apex court Md Saifur Rahman, the HC department concerned received the death reference.

The HC will prepare paper-book before going for hearing of the death reference along with appeals over the case.

On March 23, a Dhaka court sentenced 14 members of banned militant outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (Huji) to death in the case.

The court also ordered execution of the condemned prisoners by firing squad.

Judge Abu Jafar Md Kamruzzaman of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal 1 pronounced the verdict with nine convicts on the dock.

Death row convicts are Md Azizul Haque alias Md Shah Newaj, Md Lokman, Md Yusuf alias Moshab Morol, Mosaheb Hasan alias Rashu, Md Anisul Islam alias Anis, Sarwar Hossain Miah, Sheikh Md Enamul Haque, Md Mofizur Rahman, Md Mahmud Azahar, Md Rasheduzzaman, Md Tarek Hossain, Md Abdul Wadud Sheikh, Mawlana Amirul Islam and Mawlana Rafikul Islam.

Azizul, Lokman, Yusuf, Rashu, and Enamul are on the run while nine others are behind the bar.
