Gaibandha school officials caught selling free textbooks at scrap store

The residents of Gobindaganj upazila in Gaibandha seized school books meant for free distribution by the government at a scrap shop on Sunday.

The crowd blocked Uttam Kumar, the watchman of Harirampur Girls' School, and Chameli Begum, a junior teacher, who were involved in the book selling incident.

On Sunday evening, Uttam Kumar and Chameli Begum brought different books to the scram shop, and locals noticed the books were government-provided textbooks when they were being weighed.

They immediately blocked Kumar and Begum and informed the local UP member.

Meanwhile, Chameli Begum admitted to the offence and said they were selling the 2022 academic calender books to pay the electricity bill and repair a sound box.

In this regard, UP member Feroze Kabir said: “'427 pieces of books, from sixth grade to up, were being sold. The upazila education officials have been informed about the two accused.”

District Secondary Education Officer Roksana Begum said that legal action will be taken against the involved if the incident is true.
