FT ONLINE

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed has said the government is optimistic about striking a free trade agreement with the United States of America, briefly known as USA or US.

Bangladesh is now on the way to become a middle income country from least developed one. So, it will lose duty free access to many countries, including the US, he said on Thursday.

While speaking as chief guest at the inaugural session of 25th US Trade Show, he said, “We can work together for the FTA (Free Trade Agreement) that will further enhance bilateral ties."

The minister added that the government will finalise a free trade deal with Sri Lanka by this year while the process is on with Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.

Among others, US Ambassador Marcia Bernicat attended the function.
