Pro-AL teachers’ panel sweeps JUTA polls


The ruling Awami League-backed teachers’ panel swept the Jahangirnagar University Teachers Association (JUTA) polls held on Wednesday.

Out of 15 posts, the pro Awami League  panel won 11 including president and secretary while pro BNP teachers’ panel won four posts including vice-president, joint secretary and treasurer.

Professor Farid Ahmed of Physics department has been elected as President and Professor M Shamim Kaiser of Institute of Information Technology as General Secretary respectively.

Chief Election Commissioner Professor Aniruddha Kahali of Bangla department announced the polls results on Wednesday at 6.30 pm.

Prof Md Monowar Hossain of Zoology department, Associate Prof Borhan Uddin of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology department and Prof Mohammad Safiqul Islam of Economics department elected vice-president, joint secretary and treasurer respectively.

The other executive members of the body are- Prof Md Sabbir Alam of Mathematics department, Prof Ahmed Reza of English department, Prof Nazmul Hassan Talukder of Bangla department, Associate Prof Mohammad Tarikul Islam of Government and Politics department, Associate Prof  Mahfuza Khatun of Finance and Banking department, Prof Md Mizanur Rahman of Geography and Environment department, Prof Subarna Karmaker Chemistry department, Prof Shafiq-Ur Rahman of Urban and Regional Planning department, Prof Farha Matin Juliana of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology department and Associate Prof Mohammad Rezaul Rakib of Geography and Environment department.

Earlier, a total of 575 teachers out of 607 exercised their franchise at the polls held in the university teachers’ club. The voting started from 9am and continued till 1.30pm without any break.

Mentionable, pro-Awami League and the VC-backed teachers contested the polls under the banner of “Bangabandhu Shikkhak Parishad” while pro-BNP teachers were under the banner of Nationalist Teachers Forum.
