Dhaka’s Geet, Sangeet cinema halls shut down again

Two old twin halls – Geet and Sangeet – located in the Dholairpar-Jurain area of Dhaka-Mawa Expressway have again closed their operations due to financial and audience crisis.

This decision has been made due to the lack of new and quality films, and the lack of audience, according to relevant sources, read a press release.

It is learned that the closure announcement came after the screening of the movie “Togor” starring Ador Azad and Puja Cherry last Saturday.

The hall authorities said that the closure is for an indefinite period but operations may resume when new movies are released during the Eid season next year, read the release.

The announcement of the closure of the two cinema halls is not new this time. Geet and Sangeet were also closed in December 2024 due to financial losses and lack of continuity in movie releases.

Later, although it was temporarily reopened before Eid-ul-Fitr 2025, it was not permanent. The two halls are facing closure again.

Single-screen cinema halls in Bangladesh have been struggling for a long time. Although there are a total of 141 halls in the country at the moment, according to information, only about 60 of them are open throughout the year. Even among these 60, the halls are continuously closing.

According to the Hall Owners Association, cinema halls do not receive much audience except during Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha. Therefore, the halls are facing closure one after another.

In addition, many said that these are being closed due to the lack of modern facilities in the halls and not giving enough importance to their management.

The closure of these historic cinema halls highlights a broader concern within the nation’s film exhibition sector, as single-screen theatres continue to struggle in the absence of compelling content and consistent audiences.
