Complex angioplasty by Bangladeshi doctor recognised as world’s best


Complex angioplasty done by a cardiologist of National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute (NHFHRI) has got international recognition as best complex angioplasty of the world.

In its continuation, the European Bifurcation Club in the year 2020 awarded an angioplasty procedure conducted by Prof Fazila-Tun-Nesa Malik, head of the department of cardiology at National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute as the best complex procedure performed in the world.

The two other procedures of complex angioplasty those were performed in England and Japan were considered for second and third places respectively, by the international organisation, said the NHFHRI.

The European Bifur-cation Club, an internationally renowned organisation, works with the formulation of guidelines for the treatment of complex coronary heart disease, research, and complicated angioplasty procedures.

Each year the organisation honours three of the best complex angioplasties in the world.

“This is a rare achievement and honour for Bangladesh. This is the recognition of world class cardiac intervention that is done in our country,” National Professor Brig (Retd) Abdul Malik, founder of the National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh said.

National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh is a non-government, service oriented and non-profit organisation, which is also a specialised hospital for cardiac patients and also a research institute.

The National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh started its journey in 1978 under the initiative of Abdul Malik, a pioneer cardiologist in the country, with a number of doctors and social workers of other professions.

Over the last 42 years, the foundation has spread its activities in the field of treatment, prevention, research and training of manpower for cardiovascular diseases.

A 480-bed modern cardiac hospital (National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute) has been established with the support of government of Bangladesh and other organisations and individuals.

This hospital has been providing modern cardiac care at an affordable price and has become one of the high-volume centres of the region. It may be mentioned that from March 1999 to August 2020, a total of 177,964 cathlab procedures and 32,863 cardiac operations were performed in the hospital.
