‘One doctor for every 6,579 people’

There is one doctor at the government health institutions for every 6,579 people in the country, health minister Mohammad Nasim told the Jatiya Sangsad on Monday.

The health minister in a scripted answer said according to Sample Vital Registration System dated July 1, 2015, the total population of the country was 158.1 million with 22,374 doctors working under the health department against a total of 24,028 posts of physicians.

Referring to the statistics from registered doctors of Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council, Nasim said that the ratio between government and private doctors and people are 1:1,847, meaning there is one doctor (private and government) for every 1,847 people in the country.

In reply to another query, the health minister informed the House that different types of contraceptive materials were being distributed among around 2.71 crore fertile couples in Bangladesh.

Nasim also told the parliament that at present, local medicine producers were able to meet 98 per cent demand of the country while Bangladesh has turned into an export-oriented nation in medicine from import-oriented one.

In a scripted reply, Nasim also informed that in 2014, Bangladesh exported medicine to 92 countries including developed countries in Europe and America, eventually earning Tk 733 crore.

He mentioned that the export destinations increased to 120 countries in 2015 leading to export revenue of Tk 812 crore, 127 in 2016 bringing in Tk 2,247 crore and to 142 countries in 2017 bringing in Tk 3,196 crore.

Nasim said that government has allocated land at Gazaria in Munshiganj for setting up an active pharmaceutical ingredients park. He said that at the land, which has already been developed pharmaceutical companies would be able to set up factories by 2018 to manufacture ingredients.
