Modi acknowledges cooperation from Bangladesh for strengthening water connectivity


Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday acknowledged cooperation from Bangladesh Government for strengthening water connectivity in the North East of India. 

While flagging off the world's longest luxury river cruise-MV Ganga Vilas from the city of Vranasi via video conference Prime Minister Modi has said, "Building a modern multi-modal network of waterways in partnership with Bangladesh has strengthened the water connectivity in the Northeast."

The Indian Prime Minister inaugurated Haldia Multi modal terminal in West Bengal which has a cargo handling capacity of around over 3 million metric tonnes per annum and the berths are designed to handle vessel upto around 3000 deadweight tonnage.

Narendra Modi," the route of the cruise will connect Haldia of West Bengal multimodal terminal with Varanasi and is also connected with India-Bangladesh protocol route and North east of India. This also connects Kolkata port and Bangladesh resulting impetus in business not only from Indian states but also to Bangladesh."

Throwing light on the experience of the river cruise, the India Prime Minister informed that it has something special for everyone. 

He said," those seeking spirituality will cover destinations like Kshi, Bodhgaya, Viktramsila and other places and tourist looking out for a multinational cruise experience will get the opportunity to via Dhaka in Bangladesh and those wanting to witness the natural diversity will cross through Sundarbans and the forest of Asaam.

The cruise will pass through 27 different river streams of India and Bangladesh .The Ganga Vilas will begin its journey from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and travel around 3200 km in 51 days to reach Dibrugarh in Asaam via Bangladesh, sailing across 27 river systems in India and Bangladesh. 

It has three decks, 18 suits on board with capacity of 36 tourists, with all the luxury amenities. The maiden voyage has 32 tourists from Switzerland signing up for the entire length of the journey.”

The 51 days cruise is planned with visit to 50 tourists spots including world heritage sites, National Parks, River ghats, and major cities like Patna in Bihar, Shaibgunj of Jharkhand, Kolkata in West Bengal, Dhaka in Bangladesh and Guwahati in Asaam.
