Another policeman dies after contracting coronavirus


Another police official infected with Covid-19 died at Central Police Hospital in Rajarbagh of the capital on Saturday morning.

Sultanul Arefin, 44, a sub-inspector of Public Order Managemnet of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, breathed his last at around 6:53 am while undergoing treatment at ICU of the hospital.

Confirming the news, Hasan ul Haider, director of Central Police Hospital, said Sultanul was admitted at the hospital since April 27.

He tested positive for Covid-19 and had respiratory complications, Hasan added.

He left behind two daughters, a son and a host of relatives and well wishers to mourn his death.

The body was sent to his village home in Jamalpur where he will be buried after namaj-e-Janaja.

Since April 28, Sultan is the fifth police personnel to die after being infected with Covid-19.

Earlier, Sub-inspector Nazir Uddin of Special Branch of Police; Abdul Khaleq, 26, assistant sub-inspector of Public Order Management; Asheq Mahmud, a constable of DMP's Traffic North Division; and Jasim Uddin, a constable of Wari Division, died from Covid-19.

A total of 677 cops have tested positive for COVID-19 so far till May 1. Among them, 328 cops are in Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) area.

Besides, around 1225 policemen have been in quarantine while 174 are in isolation.

Some 55 cops have recovered from the dieses so far.
