BSFA to ensure safety of all imported foods: Food minister

FT ONLINE

Bangladesh Safe Food Authority (BSFA) will ensure safety of all the imported food, including milk powder.

The Food Minister Quamrul Islam said this while addressing the inaugural session of 'Food and Agro International Expo-2018' at International Convention Centre in the city's Basundhara on Wednesday.

"We want to ensure the food security at all stages including production.....Public awareness is needed for this purpose, "said the minister.

After the enactment of Safe Food Act 2013, the government founded Bangladesh Safe Food Authority in 2015 in coordination with 18 ministries and 480 organisations, he added.

Under the act, the authority will test all the imported foods to ensure food safety, he said, adding a total of 10 laboratories have already been approved for detecting food safety.

In future, the country will prepare its own laboratory for carrying out food safety test, said the minister.

Chaired by Meherun N Islam, the function was also attended by BSFA Chairman Mohammad Mahfuzul Haq, Director General of Rural Development Academy (RDA), Bogra MA Matin and Dhaka Chambers and Commerce President Abul Kashem Khan.

Highlighting the activities of Bangladesh Safe Food Authority since its inception in 2015, the minister said: "Bangladesh has achieved tremendous success in ensuring food safety which India as well as Sri Lanka could not do over the years."
