No alternative to protecting environment to save human civilization: President


President Md Abdul Hamid said there is no alternative to protecting environment to save human civilization.

“There is alternative to protecting the environment and restoring the degraded environment aiming to safeguard the existence of human civilization,” he said in a message issued on the occasion of the World Environment Day.

Abdul Hamid said the existence of the human civilization is now at stake due to extensive environmental degradation, forest destruction, unchecked pollution and climate change impacts.

He called upon all the concerned to take steps to save environment to make development sustainable.

The President said Bangladesh experiences natural disasters every year due to its geographical location and it is facing the adverse impacts of climate change too.

Referring to the Section 18 (A) of the country’s Constitution, he said by inserting this Section, the obligation and importance of environmental protection have been reflected in the highest law of the country.

Abdul Hamid said the government has declared the important areas for biodiversity and environment as the ‘protected and environmentally critical areas’, and it has been taking and implementing development projects to manage the ecosystem and biodiversity of these areas.

He said initiatives have been taken to ensure environmental sustainable development in all the economic sectors of the country.

The President said special emphasis has been given on the establishment of new economic zones and industries following the proper environmental rules and regulations.

There is no alternative to massive development in all fields, including agriculture and industry, to build a developed Bangladesh by 2041, he added.

Abdul Hamid wished overall success to all the programmes taken on the occasion of the World Environment Day.
