Historic Mujibnagar Day being observed

FT ONLINE

The historic Mujibnagar Day is being observed Tuesday marking the formation of Bangladesh's first government that led the war of liberation in 1971.

On April 17, 1971, the tiny mango grove-covered village in Baidyanathtala witnessed the ceremonial formation of the provisional government of Bangladesh and millions of people listened to the announcement of the formation of the sovereign government over radio.

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages for the nation on the occasion on Monday.

Marking the day, various programs have been chalked out in Dhaka and Mujibnagar.

In Dhaka, the programs include hoisting of national and party flags at all the district offices, central office and Bangabandhu Bhaban at 6am today, and placing floral wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Bangabandhu Bhaban at 7am.

In Mujibnagar, floral wreaths will be placed at Mujibnagar Memorial Monument at 10am while a guard of honour will be given at 10:15am.
