Special trains begin operation on Gazipur-Dhaka route

Special trains on the Gazipur-Dhaka route have started operation to ease traffic congestion on the 13km Dhaka-Mymensingh highway road.

The train 'Turag Express' left for Kamalapur in Dhaka with over a thousand passengers around 7:15 am on Sunday.

The Tangail commuter train also left at 8:20 am.

Md Rezaul Islam, station master of Gazipur Joydevpur Junction, said, “The Turag train will leave Gazipur at 7.15 am every day for Dhaka and leave Dhaka at 5.20 pm. The Kaliakair Demu train will leave Gazipur at 5.30 pm and will leave Dhaka on the following day at 1:50 pm. The Tangail commuter train will leave Gazipur at 8.20 am and then depart Dhaka at 6:00 pm.”

Passengers from Gazipur and 37 districts including the Northern areas suffer from severe traffic congestion on the 13km road from Chandona intersection to Tongi Bridge. As the development work of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project is underway in this area, the usual half-an-hour journey often takes five to six hours.

Considering the sufferings of the people due to the continuous traffic congestion, the initiative was taken to start these three train services by Gazipur-2 MP and State Minister for the Ministry of Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russel.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, Md Abu Bakr Siddique, the secretary of the Roads and Bridges Department directed to complete the 13km long Tongi to Gazipur crossroads on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway within two days while inspecting the ongoing work of the BRT project.
