BNP can hold rally only in permitted venue: DMP Chief
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will not be allowed to hold rally in any place save specified venue of Suhrawardy Udyan.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandaker Golam Faruq made the statement on Monday as BNP grand rally is slated for December 10.
The warning came from police in the wake of BNP’s adamancy to hold rally at Paltan, a place adjacent to its party office and one of the major traffic routes in the capital.
Action will be taken against BNP as per the country’s law if they hold their rally in Nayapaltan on December 10, said DMP Commissioner.
“BNP sought permission to hold their December 10 rally at Nayapaltan but we provided permission for Suhrawardy Udyan,” he said.
Replying to a question about other venue options, the DMP chief said as an alternative to Suhrawardy Udyan, the field in Pallabi, Kalshi and Ijtema ground can be the rally venue. “In that case, we’ll consider it.”
On November 29, DMP permitted BNP to hold its rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on December 10 on 26 conditions.
A notification was issued in this regard from the DMP headquarters, signed by Deputy Police Commissioner (Headquarters and Admin) Abdul Momen, on behalf of the DMP commissioner.
Following BNP’s application, DMP permitted the party to hold the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Shahbagh instead of Nayapaltan, as it may cause traffic jam and public suffering.
BNP can hold the rally at the venue from 12 pm to 4:30 pm on December 10, according to the notification.
BNP has to seek permission from the authorities concerned for using the venue, mentioning the 26 conditions, as only DMP permission is not enough for this purpose, it said.
Anti-state activities and statements at the rally venue are prohibited, read the conditions.
On Sunday, a five-member delegation of BNP met DMP Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq around 4 pm and urged him to either allow their party to have the programme in front of their Nayapaltan central office or any venue other than Suhrawardy Udyan.
