Favourable environment for fair polls yet to be created: EC
The Election Commission (EC) feels that the desired favourable environment for free, fair, impartial, participatory, and festive elections has not yet been created.
This observation has come in a concept letter sent to editors of different media outlets on Thursday.
According to the concept letter, the main rival political parties are adamant about their decisions and positions. They are trying to show support for each other by marching on the streets, mass gatherings and showing strength. The differences have not been resolved through expected dialogue and compromise.
“But the commission does not think that it is the expected solution or resolution of the crisis. Elections are the life and carrier of democracy. If the crisis in the organisation of elections continues unabated, there is a risk that democracy will be jeopardised,” it said.
The Election Commission has organised a workshop titled “Upcoming 12th National Parliament Elections: Role of Media and the Nation's Expectations of Nation” on October 26.
Some 38 editors of different media outlets have been invited to the workshop, officials said.
