Cyclone Remal destroys 275,000 houses: NDRCC


The National Disaster Response Coordination Centre (NDRCC), under the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, announced on Sunday that Cyclone Remal, which struck Bangladesh's coastal area, destroyed approximately 275,000 houses across the coastal and its adjacent 19 districts.

The NDRCC also reported that at least 16 lives were lost in the cyclone. However, unofficial reports from various media outlets said that 21 people died in the cyclone.

Among the deceased, four died in Pirojpur, three each in Bhola, Barisal and Patuakhali and one each in Satkhira, Khulna and Chittagong districts, said NDRCC in its daily bulletin.

Of these, 40,338 houses were completely destroyed and 1,33,528 houses were partially damaged.

Khulna district witnessed highest number of damaged houses as a total of 20,762 houses were totally destroyed while in Bagerhat the number is 10,000.

Besides, nearly 4,600,000 people have been affected by the cyclonic storm.

State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md Mohibbur Rahman on Monday said 150,457 houses were damaged during the storm.

Of these, 35,483 houses were fully damaged in 107 unions and 914 municipalities, said the state minister.
