Security tightened at religious sites after crude bomb explosions in Dhaka

Security has been strengthened at all religious establishments across the capital following a series of four crude bomb (cocktail) explosions in different parts of Dhaka on Monday morning.

According to a statement from the Press Wing of the Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, the interim government has taken strict measures to ensure communal harmony and has warned that the full force of the law will be applied against any attempt to disrupt interfaith coexistence.

Meanwhile, The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with the recent attacks. Preliminary investigations have identified him as a member of the banned Chhatra League, the statement said.

A verified Facebook post from CA Press Wing on Monday afternoon confirmed that the suspect is being interrogated regarding multiple incidents, including the explosions at St Mary’s Cathedral in Kakrail and the St Joseph School compound.

The statement also noted that the DMP, in coordination with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), has intensified citywide raids to arrest all individuals involved in what it called a “heinous and cowardly act of violence.”

“Security has been reinforced at all churches and places of worship of every faith in the capital,” the statement read. “The interim government reiterates its firm commitment to protecting interfaith unity and communal harmony. Any attempt to undermine religious coexistence will be met with the highest application of law.”

Police sources confirmed that four explosions occurred Monday morning in different areas of Dhaka, though no casualties or injuries were reported.

According to local reports, two bombs exploded inside and outside the boundary of Proshika’s Prabartana compound in Mohammadpur, which houses the offices of Fisheries and Livestock Affairs Adviser Farida Akhtar and writer Farhad Mazhar.

Another explosion took place in front of Grameen Bank’s headquarters in Mirpur, police said, though no one was injured.

Additionally, two other explosions were reported — one in front of Midas Center on Road-27 in Dhanmondi, and another near Ibn Sina Hospital on Road-9 in the same area.

Law enforcement agencies are investigating whether the explosions were coordinated acts of sabotage aimed at spreading fear and instability.

Officials said that special security patrols have been deployed around religious institutions, diplomatic areas, and major public places in Dhaka as part of the government’s enhanced security measures.
