Doubts over acceptable polls persist: Debapriya

Debapriya Bhattacharya, fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), has expressed concerns over the country’s capacity to hold a “credible and acceptable election”.

He said this to reporters after attending a regional consultation organised by the Citizen Platform for SDG Implementation, Bangladesh on Wednesday.

He said, “The interim government also desires an election. There is significant support for holding elections. Yet the apprehension about whether the system can deliver a fair and acceptable vote persists.”

He urged the government and Election Commission to dispel these doubts and ensure a participatory, high-quality election.

“Everyone accepts that elections will take place, but doubts over whether they will be credible and acceptable remain,” he added.

Debapriya also highlighted, “Yunus has promised to conduct the greatest election in history, and we are awaiting that.”
