Schoolgirl dies of dengue in Manikganj


A schoolgirl died of dengue on Friday night while the government confirmed hospitalisation of 607 new dengue patients across the country in 24 hours till Saturday morning.

The deceased was identified as Rubaiya Akhter, 11, a sixth grader of Wahed Ali High School and daughter of Abdur Rashid of Koyra village in Shibalaya upazila in Manikiganj.

Rubaiya was admitted to Manikganj Zila Hospital with dengue around 2:00pm on Friday and then referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said superintendent of the hospital Dr Abdul Awal.

Rubaiyawas then taken to ShaheedSuhrawardy Medical College and Hospital but after failing to find any seat there, guardians tried to take her to a private hospital in Uttara but she died on the way,said Yunus Ali, Rubaiya’s maternal uncle.

Mohiuddin Ahmed, head teacher of Rubaiya’s school said Rubaiya was buried in her village after namaz-e-janaza at the school premises around 10:00am on Saturday.

Since January, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) received information about 192 dengue-related deaths. So far, it has reviewed 96 cases and confirmed 57 dengue deaths.

According to Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS),75,753 people were hospitalised with dengue since the beginning of this year. Of them, 72,114 made full recovery.

New 607 dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals across the country till Saturday morning and among them 233 were hospitalised in the capital and 374 outside the capital.

Currently, 3,447dengue patients are being treated at hospitals and clinics – 1,719 of them are in Dhaka
