A man and a woman died of dengue in the capital and Khulna on Sunday.

In Dhaka, Nasima Akter, 48, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 9:30am, said Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH police outpost.

Nasima, who lived in the capital’s Shewrapara, hailed from Cumilla.

Meanwhile, doctors at the Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) said a man suffering from the mosquito-borne disease died in the morning.

The victim was identified as Ashiquzzaman, 37, a resident of Magura’s Shalikha upazila.

KMCH Dr Shailendranath Biswas said Ashiquzzaman was admitted to the hospital’s dengue ward in the morning.

“He died around 11am,” the doctor said.

Bangladesh has been struggling to contain a massive outbreak of dengue this year. Dhaka, its densely-populated capital city, has been at the centre of the outbreak.

The government said 75,753 people were hospitalised with dengue since the beginning of this year. Of them, 72,114 made full recovery.

Since January, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) received information about 192 dengue-related deaths. So far, it has reviewed 96 cases and confirmed 57 dengue deaths.

Currently, several thousand dengue patients are being treated at hospitals and clinics across the country.
