BNP urged govt to unveil roadmap for state reforms: Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said they have urged the interim government to unveil a roadmap for state reforms ahead of the next parliamentary election, which will transition power to an elected government.
“We met with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus twice. Each time, we urged them to present the reform outline they have promised to the public and to set a timeline so the election can be held within a reasonable period,” Fakhrul told reporters after placing a wreath at the grave of the party’s founder Ziaur Rahman on Monday.
Fakhrul, along with leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal, paid tribute to Zia marking the founding anniversary of the BNP’s women’s wing.
Fakhrul expressed confidence that the interim government would complete the necessary reforms and hold elections in a timely manner, ultimately handing power back to the people, in line with the people’s will.
When asked about India’s role in regional politics, Fakhrul replied that India’s actions towards neighbouring countries could be explained best by India itself.
“Unfortunately, we observe strained relations between India and its neighbours, which I believe stem from India’s persistent dominance in regional politics. This approach does not benefit India or its neighbouring countries,” he noted.
Fakhrul emphasised that India should foster relationships based on mutual respect, dignity, and shared interests.
Fakhrul praised the student-people’s sacrifices made during the student-led uprising, which he credited for ending the Awami League’s 16-year fascist rule.
He concluded by stating that women have played a pivotal role in the struggle for democracy, and that Mahila Dal leaders and activists are committed to continuing the fight for democracy, the rule of law, and the people’s rights.
BNP Standing Committee members Selima Rahman, Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, Mahila Dal President Afroza Abbas, General Secretary Sultana Ahmed, and Joint General Secretary Helen Zerin Khan, among others, were present at the event.
Ziaur Rahman founded the Mahila Dal on 9 September 1978, following his presidential election victory. Special prayers were offered for the salvation of his departed soul.
