Jamaat, 3 other parties welcome new election timeline

Jamaat-e-Islami Chief Dr Shafiqur Rahman and leading figures from three other political parties have welcomed the chief adviser’s announcement of an updated election timeline on Friday night.

Jatiya Ganotantrik Party, AB Party, and Nagorik Oikya welcomed the new timeframe for clearing confusions and helping ease tensions.

Until Friday night, Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus repeatedly said the next general election would be held during December 2025-June 2026 period. On Friday, he specified the timeline, saying polls would be held in the first half of April 2026.

“The nation now feels relieved knowing that a specific time frame has been announced for holding the 13th parliamentary elections,” Dr Shafiqur Rahman said in a party statement.

The countrymen now strongly aspire to see the country returning to the path of credible democracy under the supervision of the interim government, he noted.

To this end, people want the government to outline and implement the July Declaration, which would incorporate roadmaps on state reforms, trials for Awami League criminals and, finally, elections.
