Bangladesh confirms 549 new coronavirus cases, three more deaths

Bangladesh confirmed 549 new coronavirus infections on Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 6,462.

It is the biggest spike in daily new cases of the novel coronavirus in Bangladesh since the IEDCR reported first cases on March 8.

Meanwhile, three more people died of the lethal disease in the last 24 hours.  With the latest, the death toll from COVID-19 now stands at 155.

Nasima Sultana, additional director general (admin) at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), disclosed the information while briefing the media live on the daily COVID-19 bulletin at 2:30pm.

The fresh coronavirus infections were found after testing 4,332 samples in the past 24 hours, she said.

Besides, eight more patients made recovery during the period under review, taking the total number of recoveries to 139.

The global death toll from coronavirus has reached 211,663 as of Tuesday noon.

There have been 3,066,417 confirmed cases around the world after the highly contagious disease was first reported in China in December last, according to worldometer, a website that provides real-time updates.

Of those infected, 1,931,306 are currently being treated with 56,292 being in serious or critical condition.

As the virus began sweeping across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus crisis a pandemic on March 11.
