BD reports highest daily spike of 790 coronavirus cases, 3 deaths


Bangladesh has recorded its sharpest rise in daily cases of Covid-19 yet, according to the health directorate.

During a virtual briefing today, Additional Director General of Health Directorate Nasima Sultana confirmed three more deaths from the novel coronavirus and 790 new cases of infection testing 6,241 samples in the last 24 hours.

With this, the death toll from the deadly virus rose to 186 and the number of total infections stood at 11,719.

"Among the dead patients, two are male and one female. Two were residents of Dhaka and were aged above 60," Dr Nasima added.

She also said, "6,777 samples were collected in last 24 hours and 6,241 were tested, which is  9.28% higher than the previous day. A total of 99,646 tests have been performed so far." 

However, no information was provided on the number of patients recovered in last 24 hours.

As many as 4,103,945 hotline services were given by 15,638 trained doctors via three designated numbers, including 58,885 in last 24-hour till 8am today. Through mobile phone and websites, 1,723,050 services were provided, including 27,676 new services, added Nasima.

Till date, a total of 679,901 thermal screenings were conducted at different ports, including 130 at airports, 212 at seaports and 159 at land ports in the last 24 hours.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) collected by the government has been 2,011,848 by far, of which 1,590,404 were distributed and 421,480 are left in store.

Currently, 41,193 people are quarantined across the country – including 3,889 newly-quarantined individuals. A total of 160,561 people have completed their time under quarantine.

Nasima Sultana said, "The authorities placed 184 new individuals suspected of having Covid-19 into isolation, bringing the total to 1,794 after 1,327 left."

"The country is capable of accommodating 3,635 people at 601 isolation wards and 30,955 people at quarantine facilities," she added.

The virus has killed 258,511 people globally and infected 3,741,276 so far.
