Bangladesh confirms 1,273 new coronavirus cases, 14 more deaths

Bangladesh confirmed 1,273 new coronavirus infections on Sunday, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 22,268.

Meanwhile, 14 more people died of the lethal disease in the last 24 hours to 8:00am today. With the latest, the death toll from COVID-19 now stands at 328.

Among the fatalities, thirteen were male and one was female.

Nasima Sultana, additional director general (admin) at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), disclosed the information while briefing the media live on the daily COVID-19 bulletin at 2:30pm.

The fresh coronavirus infections were found after testing 8,114 samples in 42 labs in the 24-hour period, she said.

Besides, the recovery count also jumped to 4,373 after 256 patients were discharged from hospitals during the period under review.

The country reported the first cases of coronavirus on March 08 and the first death 10 days later on March 18.

In an effort to contain the virus, the government has since March 26 enforced a countrywide shutdown but numbers of new cases continue to increase.

Meanwhile, the global death toll from coronavirus has reached 313,267 as of Sunday noon.

There have been 4,722,306 confirmed cases around the world after the highly contagious disease was first reported in China in December last, according to worldometer, a website that provides real-time updates.

Of those infected, 2,596,000 are currently undergoing treatment with 44,834 being in serious or critical condition.

As the virus began sweeping across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus crisis a pandemic on March 11.
