Sahara Khatun passes away


Awami League (AL) Presidium Member and former Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun passed away on Thursday night. She was 72.

She breathed her last at 11:25 pm (Bangladesh time) at the Bumrungrad International Hospital in Thailand while she was undergoing treatment there, Anisur Rahman, nephew of Sahara Khatun, confirmed.

Sahara Khatun was admitted to a hospital in Dhaka on June 2 with a fever, allergy and other preexisting conditions and later moved to the intensive care unit when her condition deteriorated.

Later on July 6, she was taken to Thailand's capital Bangkok by an air ambulance for better treatment.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock and condolence at the death of Sahara Khatun.

Expressing deep shock at the death of the ruling party's senior leader, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, “Sahara Khatun, a soldier of Bangabandhu’s ideals, worked all her life for people’s rights and in establishing democracy.”

She also said “I’ve lost a trusted co-fighter.”

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq, state minister for Primary and Mass Education ministry Md Zakir Hossain MP among others expressed condolences at her death.

Advocate Sahara Khatun, the founding president of Bangladesh Awami Ainjibi Parishad, was elected MP thrice from Dhaka-18 constituency.

She was made the home minister in 2009 and later served as the post and telecommunication minister.

They prayed for salvation of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family members.
