BD’s COVID-19 death toll tops 2,500, caseload nears 2 lakh

Death toll from the novel coronavirus has surged past 2,500-mark in Bangladesh as the country reported 51 more fatalities in the last 24 hours to 8:00 am on Friday.

With the latest, Covid-19 death toll in the country now stands at 2,547.

The health directorate also registered 3,034 fresh infections during the 24-hour period, pushing the total case count to 199,357.

Additional Director General (Admin) of DGHS Dr Nasima Sultana presented the latest figures while briefing the media live on the daily Covid-19 bulletin at 2:30 pm today.

The fresh coronavirus infections were found after testing 13,460 samples across the country, she said.

Among the new deaths, 40 are male and the rest are female.

Thirteen of them were from Dhaka, 16 from Chattogram, six from Khulna and Barishal each, three from Rajshahi and Sylhet each, and four from Rangpur division.

The health directorate said 42 patients died at different hospitals while nine died at their respective home in the last 24 hours.

Also, 1,762 more patients have recovered from the disease during the period under review, bringing the total number of recoveries to 108,725.

Bangladesh reported its first cases of coronavirus on March 08 and the first death 10 days later on March 18.

In an effort to contain the virus, the whole country was put on lockdown for more than two months, but the pandemic is showing no sign of slowing down.

Meanwhile, the global death toll from coronavirus has reached 593,016 as of Friday noon.

It has so far infected 13,961,716 people around the world, according to Worldometer - a website that provides real-time updates.

Of them, 5,073,948 are currently being treated with 59,901 remain in serious or critical condition.

So far, 8,294,752 people have recovered. 

The novel coronavirus disease was first reported in China in December last year.

As the Covid-19 began sweeping across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a pandemic on March 11 this year.
