Shahabuddin Chuppu elected President unopposed: CEC

Awami League Advisory Council Member Md Shahabuddin Chuppu has been elected the 22nd President of Bangladesh.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal confirmed the development on Monday.

He said Chuppu has been elected unopposed for not having any other candidate for the post.

The Election Commission will issue a gazette notification in this regard today, he added.

Ruling Awami League’s nomination body headed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recommended name of the dedicated politician from Pabna district for the highest post of the state on Sunday.

Having an antique political career from the period of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Chuppu helmed Chhatra League in Pabna Edward College unit, district unit and party’s central body.

He underwent many torments during the political changeover after assassination of Bangabandhu by a group of disgruntled military officers and civilian traitors in 1975.

He entered the judicial service and elevated to District and Sessions Judge and also became a commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission.

The new President will take over as M Abdul Hamid will relinquish duty on April 23.
